The city of Washington was named for the first president, George Washington and is located on the bank of the Potomac River. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the city and district that became Washington, DC were selected, organized, and placed under the control of the United States government. International organizations, such as the World Bank, contribute to the economy of Washington, DC. Scientific research, finance and education are other industries that contribute to the growth of Washington, DCs economy. Some of the top employers in those fields, in Washington, DC, are Georgetown University, Howard University, and the Children’s National Medical Center. With so many business and professional jobs, Washington, DC has a growing and diverse economy.
