    Queen City of the Ozarks

Springfield, also known as the “Birthplace of Route 66”, was originally home to the Osage Native Americans. Springfield played an important part in the Civil War, as both sides knew of its importance and fought to control it. Some of Springfield’s cultural beginnings can be seen in its events. In the last few years, Springfield has hosted a Route 66 Festival, with vintage cars, vendors, and live performances. The Japanese Fall Festival is held at the Botanical Gardens and involves visitors from Springfield's sister city in Japan, Isesaki. Cider days and the Missouri Food Truck Festivals are also held in Springfield. Sites to see in Springfield include the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium and many history museums which are in and around Springfield.

The economy of Springfield is based on health care, retail, and manufacturing. One company that has its headquarters in Springfield is the Bass Pro Shops. Bass Pro may be known for its retail stores, but they also produce boats, fishing gear and hunting clothing. Through these endeavors, they are one of the top ten employers in the area. Many colleges in Springfield contribute to the economy, due to the influx of students that choose to call it home. Springfield’s downtown area has seen a resurgence, as the buildings have been renovated to include offices, shops, and music venues. The medical field continues to grow and employ a great many people in Springfield. There are at least four major providers and several networks with hospitals, clinics and other facilities located in and around the Springfield area. All these factors have helped Springfield’s workforce to increase and their unemployment rate to drop.
